Often, some of the most effective support comes from another person who understands what you're experiencing through their own lived experience. This encourages a genuine connection not always found in traditional, clinical-based settings. The Well-Being HUB is building a new Peer Support Program that will connect community members across the Eastern Shore and Musquodoboit Valley with trained volunteers who can offer understanding, encouragement, and hope during challenging times. What is Peer Support? Peer support is about connection — having someone to talk to who gets it. Someone who won’t judge, but will listen and walk alongside you. Peer supporters are neighbors, friends, and community members offering genuine connection based on shared human experience—not professionals offering treatment, but people who truly understand because they’ve been there too. Building the Foundation The Well-Being HUB is currently training community members to become peer supporters and has established a Peer Support Working Group made up of engaged community members who are helping to shape what the program will offer when it launches in the new year. Getting Involved The Well-Being HUB is actively recruiting community members interested in becoming trained peer supporters. If you've navigated mental health challenges and want to give back by supporting others in our community, we want to hear from you. Training and education will continue through the year with ongoing support through Community of Practice sessions where peer supporters can connect, learn, and share experiences. Peer supporters connect with community members by phone, email, or in-person—whatever works best for you. There's no waiting list, no complicated paperwork, and no cost. Conversations are confidential and focused on what matters to you.
