Spring Equinox

On March 20th, we welcome the beginning of spring! While it's still very possible to feel like winter around this time in Canada, crocuses bloom amidst the melting snow, and outdoor activities feel easier than shoveling. Just as winter is a time for rest, spring can bring a desire to move your body more, start early gardening, and you may be more apt to be more social or join a program. Just as winter zoom meetings are coming to an end, the astrological beginning of spring reminds us that everything has its time, its purpose, its place.

If you're a gardener, Spinach, radishes, and carrots can be planted as soon as the soil is workable. Start things like tomatoes and peppers indoors and if that all feels too soon for March, start by planning out your garden in your head or on a piece of paper!

Although some still start resolutions on New Years day, the beginning of spring is a fantastic time to start planning your year. Just like our yards after a harsh winter, our minds can feel like they need a good spring cleaning, too. We may feel the urge to pull weeds and make room for new growth. Winter is a great time to rest, enjoy holidays, and to sit closer to what grounds us. As spring approaches, some feel the urge to spend more time outdoors, and some don't fall for the “Fake spring” weather so many of our Atlantic provinces face around this time.

Whether you're planning more roadtrips with friends, starting an in-person book club or just making more time to be present, spring can brighten and lift moods that have felt heavy during the winter months.

Letting go of the idea that we have to be on anyone else's timeline can feel truly liberating and help calm anxious thoughts that may have piled up like the snow banks over winter. If you feel like you should be further ahead than where you are now, what is making you feel hurried into the future? Asking yourself questions, writing down anxious and overwhelming thoughts, and taking more deliberate breaths can all be ways to ease into the next season of your year. Setting intentions of the equinox is also a joyful way to remind yourself throughout the year what it is exactly that you want for yourself and your life. Read them back to yourself on the fall equinox and see if there's anything youd like to change or add!

If a date on a calendar still feels like false spring to you, let yourself be present in your winter feelings for a bit longer. Understand that your timeline is preparing itself for you. Before you know it, you'll be waking up one day, with the sun in your face, and you'll know when your own spring has arrived.
